LOVE
The artist Sylvain Subervie invites us to discover a part of Malagasy culture. It was in 1994 following his expatriation to Madagascar, that he discovered during trips to the South in the Mahafaly region, the Aloalo Totems. The Aloalo are richly carved wooden totems adorning the tombs of the Mahafaly people and have great importance in local beliefs and culture far beyond their artistic aspect!
The ritual object measures approximately 2 m and is divided into two parts, a lower part composed of geometric patterns ending with a drawing of the full moon, the “volamiratse”, as well as an upper part consisting of a sculpture of zebu, women , buses etc.
The name of Efiaimbelo (1925-2006), sculptor of aloalo, became famous thanks to the new breath he gave to his art, introducing more colors with acrylic paint and oil paint as well than contemporary elements. These works were first exhibited at the Perrotin Gallery in New York in 2018. Many other museums and galleries around the world have exhibited the aloalo as an icon.
Subervie’s approach in publishing his “Love de Madagascar” is an interpretation of the famous LOVE by the sculptor Indiana with an original and personal calligraphy inspired by the Malagasy Aloalo. This new creation is part of the POPART style and for this, it colors and decorates the pieces with a panel of proposals and plethoric applications to the point that it is possible to consider that each piece is a unique work. He thus mixes a pronounced love for his host country, the “LOVE of Madagascar” and current trends in contemporary art.
